How do I replace a damaged window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean your new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
