How To

How to replace a broken window

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
