How To

How do you replace a broken window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
