How do I replace a damaged window?
It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.
First step: Take the glass out of its frame
To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.
Second step: Clean and polish the new glass
Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.
Step 3: Install the new glass
Reattach the window panels to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.
Fourth Step: Repair the affected area
If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.
Fiveth step: Seal the repair area
After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.
Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
